Living in beautiful Northwest British Columbia is both a privilege and a tremendous responsibility.  The Terrace Chapter of the Council of Canadians has an enduring commitment to ensure that our pristine environment is preserved for future generations.  We have sought to meet this obligation by raising awareness of industrial and resource extraction projects which threaten our air shed, water systems and landscapes such as LFG (liquefied fractured gas) and aluminum smelter emissions.  The local chapter advocates for the use of renewable and low impact energy sources such as solar energy, wind turbines and geothermal energy.

The Terrace Chapter of the Council of Canadians has undertaken a number of initiatives to protect our oceans, lakes and streams, preserve our nations’ drinking water and to end destructive practices which endanger our valuable water resources.    Locally, there is a particular emphasis on saving wild salmon and steelhead, maintaining the pristine condition of the Sacred Headwaters and Skeen Water Shed as well as protecting our northern coasts from threats such as LNG development on environmentally sensitive, Lelu Island.  We also encourage the Canadian Prime Minister to implement the Northcoast Oil Tanker Ban/Moratorium which he pledged in the 2015 election.

With growing concern about the grim realities of climate change and diminishing energy resources globally, we are supporting communities fighting energy projects that will destroy their land, water and air. We are working to stop pipelines that will bring fracked natural gas and tar sands crude to new markets, and supporting the efforts of communities to say “no” to fracking. We are pushing the Canadian government for strong policies that protect our environment and focus on renewable and sustainable energy solutions. Pressing for immediate government action on climate change is also central to our efforts. We work as part of a global climate justice movement calling for “system change, not climate change.”
